A formal garden

Location: North London

The brief: The clients, who travel a lot to the orient, asked for a garden with an oriental theme. They also wanted the garden to keep an English atmosphere, a difficult  brief to achieve.

The design process: He proposed a sketch together with his ex – partner. His proposal had a bold approach: A single line that travels the site and creating new spaces, using strong lines, boulders and architectural plants. His ex partner proposed a simple lay out using straight lines. The client went for the safe formal approach for the lay out of the garden

They both agreed the patio should be larger.

In her design, he made a few suggestions like: adding cobbles between the York paving to link the design with the back area. he also changed the railway sleepers in a more informal lay out as well as the position of the Acers on the back.

The client asked him to be in charge of the planting plan and his ex partner also collaborated in the planting scheme.

The planting was well balanced using Acers, bamboos, Phyladelphus as structural plants and groundcovers such as Liriope muscari, Hakonecloa macro "aureola", Zantedeschias, etc.

Major hardlandscape materials: Yorkstone, trellis, raylway sleepers and cobbles.

Major softlandscape materials: Acers, bamboo, ferns, Alliums, etc.

The final result: A simple and formal design. The planting has a contemporary woodland style. The garden was supposed to be oriental, which end up not happening. But the clients were very happy with this English interpretation.
