A MINIMALIST GARDEN
Site description: Small and rectangular space facing south
Location: South London
The brief: Less is more and inside out
The design process: After surveying the site, two sketch proposals were presented for the client that lived in a modern and minimal space. One approach had a formal design and the last and approved one, a formal with straight line.
The planters had an asymmetrical shape to mirror the kitchen design. Roberto used a satin Finnish stainless steel planters and planted with black bamboo. Transparent glass was added as mulch. A mirror was placed in between the planter to give an illusion of a second space beyond the planters.
From the leftover of the decking and limestone the client made seats that has different function: display of plants, a seat and tables.
In all the windowsill he used galvanised window boxes and planted up with Buxus sempervirens and white cyclamem.
In the evening, where the garden looks its best, the light under the decking is on, giving an illusion of a reflective water in the limestone and planters.
Major hardlandscape material: Limestone, stainless steel, wood and glass.
Major softlandscape materials: Phylostachys nigra, Buxus sempervirens and white cyclamen
The final result: Simple lines and no ornamentation were the approach for this design where the indoors reflect the outdoors.
