A PUBLIC SPACE
Location: Highbury and Islington
Site Description: A flat site with two large areas in front of the building. the right hand side is flush with the ground and the left site was slightly raised. In the middle there is a car park for the residents. Two small buildings were built towards the end of the garden .
The Brief: The clients were looking for two gardens in front of the building where the flats overlook the space. They wanted a simple but strong concept for the two areas. The budget was low and Silva had to come up with good ideas which pleased all the residents.

The Design Process: Roberto Silva developed a three gardens instead of two but unified all of them by planting three rows of Amelankier lamarkii in a French allee style. Using his philosophy of cross fertilizing ideas, the first garden on the left side had the shape and organic lines of Burle Marx with a ramp that leads to a circular area. The garden just in front of the right building were minimal with a Betula tree planted in the middle as a focal point. The other area adjacent to the minimal garden had trees planted on each side with a lawn that leads to a sculpture or seat . In front of the garage buildings two designed trellis in organic shape were installed made of wood. The concept on the top of the page show the original idea where instead of the lawn there is a diamond pattern made of lawn and cobbles. In the organic garden, Silva designed long oak seats around the areas, features to be implemented in the future.

Major Hardlandscape: Self bind gravel, brick and pre cast concrete slab.
Major Softlandscape; Taxus baccata hedge, Betula sp, Amelanckier lamarkii, Euphorbia chacaracias wulfenii.
Final Result: A simple garden where all areas are unified by three rows of trees. It is a place where the residents use in their leisure time and also to be seen from above. particularly stunning when the Amelanckier are in blossom.
